Preparing for a newborn photography session can feel overwhelming, especially in those early days when everything is new and rest is limited. At E Mc B Photography in Chesterfield VA, my goal is always to create a quiet, gentle experience that feels unhurried and supportive for both baby and parents.
The good news is that very little preparation is actually needed. A calm newborn photography session begins with slowing down and trusting the process.
Give baby a bath the morning of the session
One simple tip that often helps babies settle beautifully is giving them a warm bath the morning of their newborn session. A bath helps babies relax, encourages deeper sleep, and leaves them feeling fresh and comfortable. It also makes them smell so delicious and their old sibling may just want to eat them up.
You do not need to do anything elaborate. A gentle, familiar bath followed by their normal lotion is perfect and often makes a noticeable difference in how relaxed baby feels during the session.
Feed baby right before the session
A full baby is usually a content baby. Feeding right before you leave the house or once you arrive at the studio, helps your newborn settle more easily and encourages longer stretches of rest. During your newborn photography session, we will pause whenever needed for feeding, soothing, or cuddling. Remember to bring extra bottles if baby is on formula.
There is always time. Nothing is rushed.
Take a little time for yourself beforehand
If possible, I always encourage moms to take a small moment for themselves a few days before the session. Whether that means resting, stepping outside for fresh air, or getting a simple manicure, these small acts of care can make a big difference.
Hands are very present in newborn photographs. They hold, support, and comfort your baby throughout the session. A light or neutral nail color photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on the connection between you and your baby rather than bold color or distraction.
An added layer of care with hair and makeup
For moms who want to feel especially relaxed and cared for, professional hair and makeup can be added to any newborn session. I work closely with a trusted artist who comes directly to the studio during your session.
While I begin photographing baby or baby and siblings, mom can settle in and enjoy having her hair and makeup done in a calm, unhurried space. It allows you to ease into the session, take a moment for yourself, and feel confident without needing to rush or prepare beforehand.
Hair and makeup services can be added on to any session and are included at no additional cost with membership plans.
Clothing made simple
Soft, natural clothing photographs beautifully and helps keep the focus on connection and emotion. Neutral tones and gentle textures work especially well for newborn sessions.
One of the things parents appreciate most is being able to simply show up without worrying about what to wear. My studio includes a thoughtfully curated client closet for moms and children, along with neutral shirt options for dads. Everything is selected to photograph beautifully and feel comfortable, so styling never needs to be a source of stress.
You are always welcome to bring your own pieces if you would like, but you can also arrive knowing that everything you need is already here.
Letting the session unfold naturally
Newborn sessions move at baby’s pace. There may be pauses, quiet moments, and time spent rocking or holding your baby. These moments are not interruptions. They are part of the experience.
Allowing yourself extra time that morning can make all the difference.
Fussiness is normal
Babies cry, stretch, and need comfort. This is expected and never a problem. Years of experience working with newborns have taught me how to gently guide babies into comfort, and parents are always welcome to step in whenever they would like.
A calm session does not mean a silent one.
Let siblings be themselves.
Newborn sessions are about the story of your growing family. Some children are thrilled to have a new sibling, some are a little apprehensive, disinterested or even jealous. Don't force or even strongly discipline during the session. I promise I will get a photo of them together that is natural and will preserve these real moments for you.
Newborn photography is not about perfection. It is about honoring this brief season exactly as it is. Tiny movements, quiet stretches, and in between moments are all part of your story.
My role as your newborn photographer is to create a calm, supportive space where your family can slow down and feel cared for.
