Fall Style

What to Wear for Your Fall Session

One of the biggest questions I get before photo day is “What should we wear?” Outfits can make such a difference in how your photos feel, and with a little planning, you will look coordinated, timeless, and comfortable. Here are my 5 favorite tips for styling your family this fall.

Child in white dress playing along a rustic wooden fence at sunset.
Family wearing neutral colors walking together in a sunlit meadow during golden hour.
Parent gently cradles baby in white outfit during outdoor golden hour photo session.
A family sits together on a blanket in a field of sagebrush during golden hour sunset.

Start with Mom

I always recommend that moms choose their outfit first. It is usually the trickiest piece to find, and once you have something you love and feel good in, it becomes much easier to build the rest of the family’s looks around it.

Coordinate, Not Match

Instead of everyone wearing the same thing, aim to coordinate by pulling colors that complement each other. Light neutrals and muted tones photograph beautifully in the fall. Some of my favorite shades include cream, blush, sage, periwinkle, taupe, and ash. These soft hues work together in a subtle way that lets your family and your connections shine.

Add Layers and Textures

Layers bring depth and interest to your photos. Think corduroy, cable knit, or a chunky cardigan. Tights under boots are perfect for little ones and add both warmth and style. Mixing textures helps your outfits look natural and cozy without feeling too polished.

Choose Classic Shoes

Do not forget about footwear since it can make or break an outfit. Pick classic shoes in neutral colors that will not distract from your overall look. Brown leather loafers, boots, or ballet flats are all wonderful choices that pair easily with fall layers.

Remember Comfort

Above all, choose pieces that feel good to wear.  The wool sweater may be adorable but if it’s too itchy, your child will look miserable no matter what we do.  If it’s too tight, it’s not right for pictures.

When you are comfortable, you will be more relaxed in front of the camera, and that always leads to the best photos…but don’t wear your gym shoes!

With a little thought and coordination, your fall session outfits will feel effortless and timeless while keeping the focus on the sweet moments you will treasure.

Always start with the mom.  Mom will carry the print in this example.  We will pull a pop of color from her dress to the corduroy toddler dress and add a chunky sweater layer.  That’s all the color we need.  Everything else we are using blends of light to medium neutrals to keep the images soft and airy but by incorporating interesting textures we embrace the fall season. Mom could also add a sweater or cute jacket if she wanted , but not necessary. Keep the shoes classic and simple, light brown boots, loafers and simple white converse like sneakers will tie this together perfectly.
