E Mc B Short & Sweet : Session Planning Guide

Family of four sitting on fallen autumn leaves, parents lovingly gazing at two young children outdoors.

Hey, I'm Erin Dyer

Smiling blonde woman in floral dress stands by white curtain indoors.

I’m so excited you’ll be joining me for your Short & Sweet Session.

My goal is never perfectly posed photographs. It’s creating images that feel natural, connected, and full of the little moments you’ll want to remember years from now.

You don’t have to worry about knowing what to do or whether your children will cooperate. I’ll guide you through the entire session while leaving plenty of room for genuine interaction. Sometimes the best photographs happen in between the poses, and those are often the ones families treasure most.

Take a few minutes to look through this guide before your session. Inside you’ll find outfit inspiration, simple tips to help everyone feel prepared, and everything you need to arrive feeling relaxed and ready to enjoy your evening.

I can’t wait to see your family this fall.

THe Session

Two toddlers playing outdoors in autumn, one holding a stick in overalls, the other in a pink dress, running on leaf-covered grass.

From the moment you arrive, my goal is for you to feel comfortable, cared for, and never rushed. The experience is designed to feel effortless and enjoyable and give you a beautiful gallery to preserve memories from this season.

Every session includes:

A relaxed  experience

Although our time together is just 15 minutes, the session is designed to feel easy from beginning to end. I’ll gently guide you while allowing plenty of room for genuine interactions, so your photographs feel like your family instead of a series of poses.

Natural guidance

You’ll never be left wondering what to do. I’ll gently guide you while encouraging genuine connection and authentic expressions.

Simple, timeless styling

Soft, neutral spaces and carefully chosen details keep the focus where it belongs, on your family.

A private online gallery

After your session, you’ll receive a beautifully curated gallery where you can choose your favorite images and purchase additional photographs if you’d like.

Professional print options

Museum quality prints, matted prints, albums, and heirloom artwork are available directly through your gallery, making it easy to enjoy your photographs for years to come.

Styling

at E Mc B Photography

One of the biggest factors in creating the light, timeless look you see throughout my portfolio is thoughtful styling. Every image on my website reflects not only beautiful light and connection, but also carefully chosen clothing that complements the space, the season, and your family.

If you were drawn to my work, styling is an important part of that look.

Soft, neutral colors, subtle textures, and flowing fabrics photograph beautifully and allow the focus to remain on the people in the image rather than busy patterns or bold colors. Together, these details create portraits that feel timeless and cohesive for years to come.

Styling Tips

CHoosing Outfits

I recommend finding mom's first.  There are 10 million cute options for children and babies and they usually fit perfectly.  Women arent so lucky.  Find something that makes mom feel beautiful and confident and plan everyone's outfit around her.  It can be a flowy dress or loose pants and a cozy sweater or jeans and a soft tee.  Just feel like yourself.

Go for  soft, timeless colors.

Neutrals, earth tones, muted blues, creams, whites, soft greens, blush, and pastels in natural fabrics will keep a classic feeling to your images.  Linen, cotton, knit and other natural fibers add a beautiful texture and movement.  Patterns add a layer of visual interest. Choose soft patterns  and limit patterns to one per every 4-5 people.

Dads

Neutral chinos, light color denim or linen pants photograph more timelessly than athletic shorts or cargo shorts.

Hair

Plan hair appointments ahead of time.

Schedule haircuts or color appointments about a week before your session if possible. If you’re between appointments, a root touch up powder or spray can work wonders.

Keep hair clean and softly styled.

freshly washed hair with soft waves or curls photographs beautifully, but the most important thing is choosing a style that feels like you.

SHoes

Shoes shouldn't be the focus of the images.  Simple shoes in neutral tones work great. Bare feet on babies are always welcome and create a relaxed, natural feel.

Nails

Hands are featured often, especially during maternity and newborn sessions. Clean nails or soft, neutral polish photograph beautifully.

Remember, you don’t have to figure this out on your own. Every E Mc B  Session includes wardrobe guidance, and I’m always happy to help coordinate outfits or suggest pieces from the client closet. Styling is one of the biggest factors in creating the timeless, cohesive look you see throughout my portfolio.

Session Advice

No day or session goes exactly as planned. And thats the beauty of it. The goal is simple.  We want to preserve natural beautiful moments.

A family shares a playful moment together on a stone patio outside a historic building.

Talk It up

Make this just one stop in a fun day.  A playground , dinner  or an ice cream treat after the session are a few good options.   Make your session the first stop of a family fun day but let it feel natural.  Dont put too much stress on smiles and behavior.   They are allowed to come and just have fun.

If your child is having a hard moment, try to resist the urge to threaten punishment or consequences. That can create a space that’s difficult to come back from especially in our limited time. Trust me to guide the session, change the pace if needed, and help everyone settle back into having fun.

Relax

We can have fun and sentimental moments but mainly we will just let everyone's authentic selves shine

Dont Practice Smiles

Mini sessions move quickly, but that doesn’t mean they have to feel rushed. I’ll keep us moving while guiding your family every step of the way. The best thing you can do is enjoy your time together and let me take care of the rest.

Please plan to arrive about 10 minutes early so everyone can settle in before we begin. Since families are booked throughout the evening, sessions will begin and end at their scheduled times. If you’re running late, simply send me a quick text so I know you’re on your way.  If you are running late, just give me a call or send a text 843-408-1989

Trust me

Many beautiful moments are in the in between.  Dont feel the pressure to show up and smile the whole time.  I promise they dont need to look at the camera the whole time and toddlers are beautiful being toddlers.
